Linear equation—is an equation in which term is either a constant or the product of a constant times the first power of a variable. Such an equation is equivalent to equating a first degree polynomial to zero. These equations are called linear because they represent straight lines in Cartesian coordinates. A common form of a linear equation in two variables is y=mx + b. An algebraic equation, such as y= 2x+7 or 3x+2y-z=4, in which the highest degree term in the variable or variables is of first degree. The graph of such an equation is a straight line if there are two variables.
